Louisiana black bear hunting season concludes with successful harvest in historical area

Louisiana – The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) recently wrapped up a successful Louisiana black bear hunting season, which saw 10 bears harvested in northeast Louisiana from December 7-22, 2024.

Among the hunters were Fisher Brown and Perry Pitre Jr., who relived history by hunting in the same region where President Theodore Roosevelt famously hunted over a century ago.

Both hunters harvested male bears near Bear Lake in Madison Parish, on or adjacent to the property where Roosevelt camped and took a bear during his 1907 hunting trip.

LDWF’s Large Carnivore Program Manager John Hanks noted the historical connection, emphasizing the significance of the location for conservation history.

The season’s success reflects the thriving habitat in Bear Management Area 4, which includes Tensas, Madison, East Carroll, and West Carroll parishes, along with portions of Richland, Franklin, and Catahoula parishes.

The area, restored through extensive conservation efforts, continues to support a robust population of Louisiana black bears, a testament to collaborative habitat restoration work.
