Louisiana – The Louisiana Department of Health is now accepting applications for the Louisiana Doula Registry, allowing registered doulas to receive insurance reimbursement, including up to $1,500 per pregnancy through Louisiana Medicaid.

Developed by LDH’s Bureau of Family Health in collaboration with the Louisiana Doula Registry Board, the registry will serve as a database of approved doulas eligible for insurance reimbursement under Louisiana Revised Statute 22:1059.2.

Doulas provide physical, emotional, and educational support to pregnant individuals and their families before, during, and after childbirth. Registered doulas offer non-medical care and education but do not provide medical or midwifery services.

Studies have shown that doula care can lead to improved pregnancy outcomes, including fewer cesarean sections, more spontaneous vaginal births, shorter labor duration, higher maternal satisfaction, increased breastfeeding rates, and lower rates of preterm labor and low birth weight.

To apply, doulas must complete the application here.

Required information includes legal name, date of birth, contact details, a recent photograph, National Provider Identifier (NPI), education history, and details on experience and training.

The Louisiana Doula Registry Board will review applications quarterly, beginning in March 2025.
