Jacksonville, FLORIDA – According to the court documents, the 35-year-old mom, later identified as Maria, was sentenced to life in prison after she reportedly killed her 5-month-old baby four years ago. Prosecutors said the mother reportedly chose the place where her husband proposed for marriage to kill her baby because the infant’s father wanted to file for divorce .
The woman then tried to take her own life by shooting herself in the chest. In March 2020, officers responded at the parking lot where the mother’s vehicle was parked. The responding officers and first responders realized that the woman was shot.
During an initial interview with investigators, she told them that she wasn’t assaulted and told them that nobody shot her, but couldn’t breathe. Officers then found the little baby in the truck. The 5-month-old infant also suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.
During the investigation process, authorities reportedly discovered that the defendant wrote a letter earlier that day, stating “I know this is a permanent solution to a temporary problem but it’s my choice.” Prosecutors claim the woman shot her baby to death and then tried to take her own life because her husband wanted to divorce her.
