Shreveport, LA – The Shreveport Fire Department urged residents to practice fire safety during the current cold weather conditions. Officials emphasized the importance of regular chimney cleaning and maintenance to prevent fire hazards.
They also advised burning only dry, seasoned wood to minimize buildup and reduce the risk of chimney fires.
Residents were reminded to keep all flammable objects at least 3 feet away from fireplaces and wood-burning stoves. Space heaters should be placed on flat surfaces, kept at least 3 feet from any objects, and plugged directly into wall outlets to avoid potential fire risks.
The department also stressed the importance of using generators outdoors, at least 20 feet away from homes, to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Residents were encouraged to check that all carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms are fully functioning.
