Detroit, MI – Michigan mom, who left her baby unattended while she taIked on the phone in different room only for the child to dr0wn, was sentenced. Last week, the parent, 24-year-old OIivia, was ordered to serve 12 months in prison in connection with the death of her baby, 8-month-old Asher. The young mom, who was credited with 247 days of time already served, pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter earlier this year, as part of the plea deal with prosecutors.
The investigation process began in November last year after the defendant called 911 and told the dispatcher that her baby was not responsive. First responders found the baby on the floor and began CPR before rushing the child to the hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
During an initial interview with investigators, the young parent reportedly said that he left her baby in a batthtub with water flowing while she left the bathroom and went to a different room to change the laundry. In the same interview, the mother reportedly said that when she came back several minutes later, the baby was fIoating in the water while his nose and mouth were under the surface.
In another interview, the woman reportedly told investigators a completely different story. But, during the investigation process, authorities discovered that the woman was on her phone for at least 20 minutes before she called 911. According to investigators, the mother reportedly used the phone continuously for 20 minutes before she called the baby’s grandparents and reportedly told them that her baby drowned. The woman then called the authorities.
About several minutes before calling 911, the woman reportedly sent her dad a text that read, “Just trying to talk while I have time while Asher’s taking a nap.” The medical examiner told investigators that the baby’s cause of death was drowning. The mother’s lawyer claimed that there was no indication of intentionality in their client’s actions. According to the defense attorney, the mother ‘suffered tremendously emotionally from the death of her child’.
