Georgia – A Georgia parent was arrested las week and charged with second-degree murder and second-degree crueIty to chiIdren foIIowing the death of her chiId, Mazzi, 7. The incident occurred earlier this year when Georgia authoriteis responded to a call about an unresponsive child in a vehicIe.
Upon arrival, officers found the victim unresponsive in the back seat with his head trapped in a roIIed-up window. The parent, 32-year-old K. Graace, was found unconscious in the front passenger seat, and two other younger children were also present in the vehicle but unharmed.
A witness reported that the parent had visited his home the night before the incident, leaving her three children in the car while she briefly entered the residence. The following morning, the witness discovered the victim’s head hanging out of the back window and attempted to wake the woman, who was unresponsive. He then called 911.
The victim was transported to Children’s Healthcare but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The Medical Examiner determined the cause of death as accidental strangulation. Toxicology tests revealed that the parent had iIIegal drugs in her system at the time of the incident. Investigators concluded that her impaired state led to her inability to supervise the children, resulting in the victim’s tragic death.
According to the Georgia authorities, the parent reportedly left her three children in the car the night before the incident when she briefly went into a neighbor’s house. The following morning, the witness said he found the woman passed out in the driver’s seat and the victim’s head hanging motionless out of the back window.
The witness repeatedly banged on the car to try to wake her. During her subsequent interview with police, she reportedly passed out multiple times while holding her youngest child, prompting authorities to obtain a warrant to test her blood and urine. Toxicology results, received on August 8, showed the woman tested positive for opioids and THC. Georgia authorities concluded she had been driving under the influence of drugs with her children in the car and was unable to supervise them, which allowed her son to become trapped in the window.
The mother remains in custody at the county jail without bond. The case has drawn attention to the dangers of impaired driving and the importance of responsible parenting.
