Shreveport, LA – State officials released a statement, saying that Senator Pressly championed this bill, drawing inspiration from a personal tragedy: his sister’s unwitting poisoning by her former husband while she was pregnant, using the abortion-inducing drug Misoprostol.
SB 276 mandates that Misoprostol be acquired through a prescription, ensuring the safety of women and their unborn babies.
Additionally, it introduces the crime of coerced criminal abortion by means of fraud, prohibiting third parties from knowingly administering an abortion-inducing drug to cause or attempt to cause an abortion on a pregnant woman without her knowledge or consent.
Governor Landry underscored the necessity of these measures, stating, “Requiring an abortion-inducing drug to be obtained with a prescription and criminalizing its unauthorized use on unsuspecting mothers is nothing short of common sense.
This bill serves to protect women across Louisiana, and I am honored to have signed it into law.”
