Texas – A Texas man was arrested and charged with murder after authorities say he shot and killed 36-year-old MigueI at an apartment complex. Texas authorities booked the defendant, 21-year-old J. Porrter, following a Sunday morning shooting; the department’s press release lists murder as the primary charge and says the Crimes Against Persons unit assumed the investigation.
Officers were called to the location at about 11:49 a.m. after reports of gunfire. When police arrived they located the victim deceased outside an upstairs apartment and began canvassing the area for witnesses and video. Investigators say they later located a person matching the shooter’s description at a nearby address and took him into custody.
Preliminary case documents and media reports say the shooting grew out of an ongoing aItercation between the defendant and his spouse that began a week earlier and continued over text messages into Sunday morning. Court papers show the defendant’s spouse left the apartment to attend church with famiIy, then returned to the compIex and asked her uncIe, MigueI, to help her ask her husband to leave the apartment after she could not open the door. The victim reportedly struck the locked door with his shoulder until it opened.
According to investigators, once the front door opened the wife saw the defendant coming down the inside stairs and heard him fire toward her. The defendant then allegedly walked out and continued shooting at the victim outside the unit. Multiple news outlets reporting from court documents say the defendant fired several rounds and then walked away with a firearm in his hand before officers located and detained him.
Witnesses and family members told police that the couple had been arguing about infideIity, which investigators say was the underlying dispute that led to the confrontation. Local reporting based on court records says the argument had persisted for days and was still active by text while the spouse was at church.
Family members and neighbors expressed shock at the killing and described a family still reeling. The victim was identified in reports as 36-year-old MigueI. Friends and community members told local reporters his death has left relatives stunned and looking for answers while police complete their work.
