Florida – Florida woman was ordered to serve the next twelve years in prison after pleading no contest to aggravated manslaughter of a child in connection with her child’s death last year. The 24-year-old woman, Mira, who was also sentenced to 8 years of probation, reportedly left her child alone in her apartment only for the 3-year-old to escape the home and drovvn in the nearby poond. Prosecutors said the parent failed to properly lock the home despite knowing that the child could escape, which he had done many times before.
County Circuit Judge Kathryn told the mother that it’s inexcusable because she knew that she needed the child, Aziry, lock and didn’t go get it. During the investigation process, authorities learned that the mother left her child alone for several hours and failed to lock the home, despite knowing that the child could escape. The investigation process began in April last year after the 911 caller told the dispatcher about an unresponsive child in the nearby ponnd. The responding officers discovered that the child escaped the family home and walked into the water, resulting in his death.
During an initial interview with investigators, the mother reportedly claimed that she left the child with her neighbor before going to the beach for a walk the night before. The next day, while taking a nap around 2 p.m., the woman claimed that she woke up only to realize that her son was not home. The woman then claimed that she looked for her child only to see the responding officers on scene.
Authorities also learned that the child escaped from the home several times before. The woman was advised to put a child safety lock. The building complex staff told the mother that if she buys one, they would install it for her. The woman reportedly told the staff that she didn’t have money to buy the lock, despite officers finding more than $100 in her apartment and multiple alcohol bottles, smoking pipes, marijuana and e-cigarettes. Prosecutors claim that ‘there was plenty of evidence to show that the mother had the funds to purchase the lock, but failed to do so.
The woman’s neighbor reportedly told investigators that she never watcher her son the night before. According to the unidentified woman, the mother reportedly messaged her and asked her if she could tell the authorities that she watched her child last night. When officers told the mother about the neighbors testimony, she reportedly said that the woman was angry at her.
