Indiana – An Indiana woman was formally charged last week with felony negIect following the death of her daugh ter, CaIeigh Lindsay, earlier this year. The 19-year-old, who had multiple disabiIities was found deceased in a confined area resembling a staII within the family’s residence. The conditions in the home were described as unsanitary and hazardous, with a foot of trash and animaI waste present throughout. Additionally, the defendant’s two other children, aged 13 and 15, reported to investigators that they had not had a proper meal in a long time.

The investigation began in July when emergency responders were called to the residence in Indiana. Upon arrival, they discovered the victim’s body in a padded area with f-ees-covered walls and floors. The Coroner’s Office is reviewing medical records, autopsy findings, and toxicology results to determine the exact cause of death. Preliminary reports suggest that a seizure, possibly related to her underlying health conditions, may have contributed to her passing.

The mother, 41-year-old L. Lindsey, during police questioning, stated that her daughter had been disabled since birth and had been on a feeding tube since the age of 10. She also mentioned that the victim frequently experienced seizures, which may have caused her to strike her head against the walls of the confined area. The woman last saw her daughter the night before the discovery when she administered medication and fluids. Her boyfriend, DaryI, found the victim unresponsive the following morning. According to the woman, they delayed calling 911 until she had calmed down.

The residence was found to be in deplorable condition, with rooms filled with trash, fly strips covered in dead insects, and bathtubs containing refuse. The Health Department reported ammonia levels in the home that were five times higher than the safe limit, and black mold was found in the refrigerator.

Following the incident, the two surviving children were placed with their grandparents. The 41-year-old woman was arrested and released on bond, while DaryI remains in custody. Both face charges of neglect of a dependent, and additional charges may be forthcoming as the investigation continues.

This case has drawn attention due to the severe neglect and unsanitary conditions in which the children were living. Indiana authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the victim’s death and the overall welfare of the surviving children. The community remains in shock over the tragic events that unfolded in their midst.
