Louisiana – Governor Jeff Landry announced that the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections has finalized and implemented a revised protocol for carrying out the sentences of those on Death Row.
The updated Protocol for Executions of Death Sentences includes provisions for the newly approved nitrogen hypoxia method, which was passed with bipartisan support by the Louisiana Legislature.
The decision affirms Louisiana’s commitment to fulfilling the promises made to victims and communities that have demanded justice for the most violent crimes.
“For too long, Louisiana has failed to uphold the promises made to victims of our state’s most violent crimes; but that failure of leadership by previous administrations is over,” Governor Landry said. “The time for broken promises has ended; we will carry out these sentences and justice will be dispensed.”
Governor Landry emphasized that these capital punishment cases have undergone extensive judicial review, with decades of unsuccessful appeals, and affirmed death sentences. He called on district attorneys to finalize these cases and urged the courts to act swiftly to deliver justice to the crime victims who have waited too long.
“I anticipate the national press will embellish on the feelings and interests of the violent death row murderers,” Governor Landry concluded. “We will continue to advocate for the innocent victims and the loved ones left behind.”
