Louisiana – Governor Jeff Landry joined President Donald Trump at the White House to announce that Hyundai Steel Company (HSC) has chosen Louisiana as the site for a first-of-its-kind steel manufacturing facility.
The project, representing a nearly $6 billion investment in Ascension Parish, is expected to create 1,400 direct jobs with an average salary of $95,000, along with an estimated 4,100 indirect jobs, bringing the total job impact to 5,500 in the Capital Region. Construction is set to begin in the third quarter of 2026.
“Hyundai’s decision to invest nearly $6 billion in Ascension Parish speaks volumes about Louisiana’s skilled workforce, robust infrastructure, and our ability to compete for innovative manufacturing facilities,” Governor Landry said. “This announcement makes clear that Louisiana’s manufacturing sector is roaring back, thanks to our historic tax reforms and President Trump’s economic policies.”
This marks the largest single economic development project announced in the region since the Baton Rouge Area Chamber (BRAC) was formed in 2005. HSC plans to import approximately 3.6 million tons of iron ore annually to the facility.
The mill is expected to produce 2.7 million metric tons of steel per year, with finished steel coils transported by rail and truck to major customers, including Kia, General Motors (GM), and Ford. The largest share of steel manufactured in Louisiana will supply Hyundai Motor Company’s vehicle plants across the U.S.
To support the facility, HSC is partnering with the Port of South Louisiana to construct a deep-water dock on the West Bank of Ascension Parish for steel and material shipments. Additional infrastructure enhancements, including road, rail, electric, and pipeline upgrades, will enable the full development of RiverPlex Megapark, attracting future suppliers and manufacturers to the area.
