Shreveport, LA – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has announced a planned operation to apply a surface abrasion treatment on a section of I-220 near the I-49 interchange in Shreveport, Caddo Parish. The effort is aimed at increasing road friction and improving safety for motorists, particularly during wet weather conditions.
The decision follows a recent uptick in crashes along the I-220 corridor near the interchange, involving 18-wheelers and other vehicles. Many of these incidents occurred during heavy rainfall, highlighting the need for added traction on the roadway.
According to DOTD, the treatment will enhance the pavement’s grip in both dry and wet conditions, providing drivers with better control and reducing the likelihood of hydroplaning. The surface abrasion project is classified as a supplemental safety measure and is not a full resurfacing operation.
The work will begin on the night of Sunday, May 11, and continue through Thursday, May 15, 2025. Crews will operate nightly from approximately 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. between US 71 (North Market Street) and LA 173 (Hilry Huckaby Avenue). A second phase of the project is scheduled for the following week, from Sunday, May 18, through Thursday, May 22, during the same overnight hours.
Conducting the operation at night is intended to minimize disruptions to daily traffic. However, DOTD notes that the schedule is weather dependent, and rain could result in postponements or rescheduling.
While the improvements are expected to enhance roadway safety, transportation officials continue to urge drivers to remain vigilant, especially in changing weather conditions. Safe driving practices remain a critical factor in preventing accidents.
