Shreveport, LA – The recreational and commercial seasons for Lane Snapper in Louisiana waters will close at 12:01 a.m. on December 2, 2024, and reopen on January 1, 2025.
Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Secretary Madison Sheahan announced the closure following notification by NOAA Fisheries that Federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico would close for Lane Snapper harvest on November 26, 2024.
The decision was based on data indicating that the 2024 annual catch limit of 1,088,873 pounds is projected to be reached by November 26, 2024. Compatible season regulations between state and federal waters aim to provide effective enforcement and protect the long-term sustainability of the species.
During the closure, recreational harvesting or possession of Lane Snapper in Louisiana and Federal waters is prohibited. Commercial harvest, possession, purchase, barter, trade, or sale of Lane Snapper is also banned, with an exception for those caught, landed, and sold before the closure date and held in cold storage, provided records are properly maintained in accordance with state regulations.
The Lane Snapper season will reopen on January 1, 2025.
