Shreveport firefighters honored for bravery and outstanding service

Shreveport, LA – Several members of the Shreveport Fire Department were recognized this week by Mayor Tom Arceneaux and the Shreveport City Council for acts of exceptional bravery and service.

Two Fire Chief Commendations were presented during the recent ceremony. Chief of Fire Prevention Mike Hood received special recognition for being named Explosive Ordnance Disposal Tech of the Year by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) at both the state and national levels. The award acknowledges Hood’s extensive experience and leadership in the department’s Bomb Squad, where he has served for decades.

In a separate commendation, Captain Clint Rushing, Fire Engineer Austin Harrell, and Firefighter Josh Wilcher of Engine 7 were honored for their heroic actions during a house fire on June 7, 2025. The crew quickly scaled a wooden fence and removed burglar bars to rescue a trapped individual from a fast-moving blaze—efforts officials say likely saved a life.

“It is always a wonderful day when we have firefighters recognized for their exemplary service and commitment to excellence,” said Fire Chief Clarence Reese.

The awards highlight the continued dedication and courage of the department’s personnel, and city leaders are encouraging the community to join them in thanking those recognized for their extraordinary contributions.
