Shreveport, LA – Shreveport Police Youth Services detectives are investigating a troubling case of child abuse that led to the arrest of Brittany West. Officers were called to a local school where two juveniles, ages 14 and 11, were found with multiple scars and lacerations across their bodies.
After an investigation, detectives determined that the injuries were the result of repeated physical punishment using an extension cord. Some of the wounds on the children were found to date back several weeks, indicating ongoing abuse.
In a statement, the Shreveport Police Department emphasized that discipline should never involve instruments intended to cause greater pain. Officials underscored that hitting children with objects, regardless of intent, constitutes abuse—not parenting.
“Discipline must be delivered in a safe, calm, and controlled manner—not out of anger,” the department stated. Striking children across their bodies or using excessive force is both dangerous and illegal under Louisiana law.
The incident comes during April, which is recognized as Child Abuse Prevention Month. Authorities hope that public awareness and education efforts will help prevent similar cases in the future. The department urged the public to remain vigilant and to report suspected child abuse to authorities, reminding the community that no child should suffer in silence.
Brittany West has been taken into custody, and the case remains under investigation.
