
Louisiana – A Louisiana woman was taken into custody last week after police say she fataIIy sttruck her 5‑year-old grandchiId, Karson, while the chiId preparing to Ieave for schooI and was waiting to the schooI ride. Louisiana authorities charged her with vehicuIar homicide, alleging she was impaired by aIcohoI and central nervous system depresants at the time.
According to police, the defendant left her home around 7 a.m. to drive to work, not realizing the chiId was standing in front of her vehicIE, waiting for the schooI ride. Witnesses and responders say she did not notice him before pulling forward, and he was struck almost immediately.
At the time, the child had been in the driveway of their home, preparing to leave for school and waiting for the school ride. The woman did not notice the 5-year-old being outside and continued to leave for work only to strike the boy with her vehicle, killing him instantly according to the police department said in a Facebook release.
Investigators at the scene conducted impairment tests and, with the help of a drug-recognition expert, concluded that she was under the influence of both aIcohoI and central nervous system depressant substances. Police Chief DanieI described the event as any parent’s worst nightmare, stressing the tragedy’s impact on first responders and the community.
The victim had recently turned five in June. An autopsy has been scheduled by the coroner’s office to determine the cause formally.
Though details are still emerging, the investigation remains underway. Police say the elderly woman was booked into jail shortly after the crash. The victim’s family is mourning the loss, and the incident has prompted a strong emotional response from both the child’s mother and local officials.
