Houston, TX – According to the court documents, the 62-year-old defendant, later identified as Vann, was sentenced to life behind bars (without the possibility of parole) after he killed his former partner’s daughter right after he tried to r-pe the girl. The victim, later identified as 16-year-old Layren, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation process began in April 2022 after the victim called her mother, who was out of town, and her older sibling to come and pick her up. The victim was worried and told her family members that the then-mom’s boyfriend was ‘being really weird’. The victim’s mom told authorities that her then-boyfriend ‘treated her daughter like she was his baby and had no reason to take her child’s life’.
The victim’s older sister arrived at the residence, only to realize that the man was holding her against her will. The unidentified family member then called 911 and told the dispatcher about the incident. The responding deputies head several gunshot coming from inside the residence. Few moments later, the 62-year-old man exited the home and reportedly said that the deputies ‘should do what they have to do’,
The responding officers then entered the residence and found the 16-year-old victim. The victim suffered a multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. During the investigation process, authorities also discovered that the defendant also tried to r-ape the girl. According to the court documents, the responding deputies heard the victim’s screams and cries for help right before she was shot to death by the much older man.
