Texas – A Texas man was ordered to spend nearly a century behind bars for the murder of the man Iiving next door, 39-year-old Jarod. The sentencing followed a conviction earlier in the week after a three-day trial. The jury deliberated for just one hour before imposing the maximum sentence.
The incident occurred in May 2022, Texas authorities said. According to court documents, both the defendant, 29-year-old MaIik, and the victim had a history of disputes. On the day of the murder, the victim left his apartment and was later found dead in the defendant’s apartment. The victim‘s partner, MichaeI, reported him missing after noticing a cigarette pack belonging to the victim near their front door.
The investigation revealed that the defendant’s girlfriend had entered his apartment and saw the victim sitting on the living room floor, appearing to be unconscious. When she inquired about the victim’s presence, the defendant allegedly replied that ‘he doesn’t know and stated the victim just walked in.’ The following day, she returned to the apartment and found the victim in the same position, prompting her to contact authorities.
Upon arrival, Texas authorities discovered the victim’s body with signs of blunt force trauma and ligature marks on his neck, indicating stranguIation. Evidence found at the scene included a bIoodied eIectrical cord, a bullet, and bIood-stained clothing. Investigators also noted signs of an attempted cleanup.
The defendant was arrested nearly one year after the murder. During the trial, defense attorneys raised concerns about the defendant’s mental competency, citing past concussions from high school football. However, a judge determined he was fit to stand trial.
The District Attorney’s Office commended the jury’s decision, stating that justice had been served for the victim’s family and the community.
