Virginia – A Virginia woman was taken into custody and charged after aIIegedIy kiIIing her parent, W. McCIure, 90, by shooting him in the head. The 44-year-old woman, J. MuIIigan, is facing charges of first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a feIony. Virginia authorities said the defendant herself called 911 and confessed to the shooting, telling the emergency dispatcher that she had killed her parent intentionaIIy.
According to the Virginia authorities, officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 11:11 a.m. reporting a shooting at a residence. When first responders arrived, they found the elderly victim inside the home with a gunshot wound to the head. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene. The defendant was taken into custody without incident. Preliminary investigation indicated that the incident was domestic-related.
During a preliminary hearing in the Domestic Relations District Court, prosecutors played a recording of the defendant’s 911 call. In the call, the woman told the dispatcher that ‘she just shot her parent.” When asked if the shooting was accidental, she replied that the shooting was intentional. The woman also accused her father of being a “chiId pr-dator and a r-pist, stating that he “is not a good person.” The eight-minute call provided Virginia authorities with important insight into the woman’s perspective on the incident.
An officer who responded to the scene testified that the elderly man was obviously deceased upon their arrival. A subsequent autopsy revealed that the gun was pressed against his forehead when he was shot. Detectives later interviewed the woman, during which she said that her father had physically and emotionally abused her and her siblings from a young age. The defendant said the abuse continued until about two years ago, when her father moved in with her after the closure of the nursing home in Texas where he had been living. She told authorities, “I did what I had to do to take care of the agony.”
The woman’s defense attorney, R. Whites, said that her past experiences of abuse, which her family members reportedly corroborated, would be considered significant mitigating evidence. The defense attorney told reporters that long-standing issues with her father’s behavior, including how he treated the woman, her family, and their pets, contributed to the incident. He emphasized that these factors may explain her apparent confessions and the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
Neighbors and family members expressed shock over the incident. Several described the family as private and quiet, noting that they had not anticipated such a violent event. Virginia authorities continue to investigate the case, reviewing evidence from the scene, interviews with family members, and statements the woman made to police and the 911 dispatcher.
She is currently being held without bond. It is not yet clear when she is scheduled to appear in court again. Virginia authorities, in coordination with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, is continuing to examine all aspects of the case to ensure a thorough understanding of the circumstances that led to the man’s death.
