Detroit, MI – Police officials released a statement, saying that the elderly man, later identified as 73-year-old Garry, was taken into custody and later charged with multiple charges, including assault with intent to murder and felonious assault after he approached a child, while she was playing, only to lift her head and sIash her thrroat. The child, later identified as 7-year-old Marla, then ran to her mom for help, screaming in pain.

This unfortunate incident occurred in a city parrk full of little kids, police officials said. During an interview with investigators, the child, who was with her grandparent, reportedly said the elderly man came out of nowhere and pulled the weapon on her before he sIashed her throat, leaving her with a deep cut wound. Right after the incident, the child ran home for help. Luckily, a neighbor heard the screaming and helped the child stop the bIeeding.

The 73-year-old man was arrested shortly after the incident. The man’s wife told authorities that her husband has mental health problems. First responders treated the child on scene before rushing her to the hospital. The child’s injury required several stitches, police officials said.

According to the DA’s office, although the victim is of Arab descent, they still have no evidence that supports that this was a hate crime. An attorney of record for the 73-year-old is not listed in court documents. The victim’s mom, Shahran, told local news outlets that her child is lucky to be alive because the cut was really deep. Garry’s wife, Linda, posted on her social media profile and asked her family and friend for support about her partner’s condition.
