Jacksonville, FL – According to the police officials, the 19-year-old woman, later identified as Briana, was arrested and later charged with multiple charges, including: aggravated mansIaughter of a child, child negIect with great bodily harm and failure to report death after she delivered her baby in a bathroom only to kill the child and then dump the newborn’s body in a trash can. The fatal incident occurred earlier this year, but the 19-year-old was formally charged last week, court records say.

The investigation process began after the woman’s roommates called the authorities in April after they found bIood in the bathroom and heard a baby crying. The responding officers made contact with the 19-year-old woman, who reportedly claimed that the bIood was from her m-nstrual period. One day later, the same witnesses found a towel, which was covered in bIood, in her trash and called 911. The responding officers then found the deceased baby wrapped in a towel.

During an interview with investigators, the 19-year-old reportedly admitted to delivering her child in the bathroom. The woman also told investigators that she held the newborn against her body until the baby stopped weeping and had no pulse. The woman then placed the baby on the towel before she fell asleep. After waking up, the woman wrapped the baby in a towel and put the newborn’s body in a trash can. She then fell asleep again, police officials said.nThe medical examiner told investigators that the baby suffered multiple broken ribs and had a bleed on the brain.

The woman also told authorities that she hadn’t had a period in 1 year, but didn’t know she was pregnant. The 19-year-old was taken into custody at her home in Mississippi and will be extradited to Florida. It remains unclear why the young woman haven’t decided to give up the baby to the state under the Safe Haven Law which allows for newborns to be dropped off at a hospital, police or fire station, or freestanding emergency centers without facing legal repercussions.
