Shreveport Fire Department hosts trauma life support training to enhance patient care and survival rates

Shreveport, LA – The Shreveport Fire Department recently hosted a 16-hour Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) course at its Training Academy.

Led by the department’s Medical Director, Dr. David Janese, alongside Charles Menefee, the course was designed to equip emergency responders with advanced skills to improve trauma care in prehospital settings.

The intensive training emphasizes maintaining high standards in trauma response, with the ultimate goal of reducing mortality rates among trauma patients.

As Shreveport fire and EMS crews frequently respond to emergency calls—many of them involving traumatic injuries—continued education like the PHTLS course is crucial in ensuring optimal patient outcomes.

“Courses like this help ensure that our first responders are always prepared with the latest knowledge and techniques to care for trauma patients in the field,” a department spokesperson said. “It’s about increasing survivability and delivering the best possible care.”

The Shreveport Fire Department remains committed to ongoing training and professional development, recognizing that every second counts when responding to emergencies.
