Shreveport police step up efforts to curb gun violence, seize over 400 firearms in 2025

Shreveport, LA – The Shreveport Police Department’s Violent Crimes Abatement Team has ramped up efforts to address gun violence, with more than 400 illegally possessed and altered firearms seized so far this year.

In a statement released Friday evening, the department highlighted a particularly active week for the VCAT unit, which has been targeting violent offenders and responding to gun-related complaints across the city.

“This team is out there every day doing the difficult work of getting dangerous weapons off our streets,” SPD officials said. “Their efforts are making a real difference in keeping Shreveport neighborhoods safer.”

The department shared a series of photos showcasing some of the week’s most significant seizures — visual evidence of VCAT’s ongoing commitment to public safety.

The 400-plus firearms recovered in 2025 reflect a broader strategy by SPD to address violent crime through direct intervention and community-focused enforcement. Many of the confiscated weapons were illegally possessed or modified, posing heightened threats to both law enforcement and the public.

City officials are encouraging residents to continue reporting suspicious activity and gun-related incidents, emphasizing that community cooperation remains a key component in reducing violent crime.

As summer approaches — a season often associated with a spike in violence — SPD says it will maintain a strong presence in neighborhoods, continuing to prioritize gun seizure efforts and the apprehension of violent offenders.
