Caddo Parish commission approves living wage ordinance for contractors

Shreveport, LA – The Caddo Parish Commission amended an ordinance to require vendors contracted by the Parish to pay employees working on Parish projects at least $15.00 per hour.

The amendment applies to:
– Businesses with 16 or more employees.
– Contracts of $25,000 or more that are not mandated by Louisiana law to be publicly bid.

This change builds on legislation passed in August, which raised the minimum classified pay rate for permanent Parish of Caddo employees to $15.00 per hour.

District 2 Commissioner Gregory Young emphasized the importance of the measure, stating, “The Commission’s recent action on raising the living wage for our employees and those contracted for Parish work is part of the Commission’s ongoing commitment to improving the economic well-being of our residents… This legislation marks a significant step toward greater economic equity.”

Caddo Parish joins Orleans Parish as one of only two local governments in Louisiana to adopt such a living wage ordinance, aligning with similar efforts in over 140 cities and counties across the United States.
