Louisiana Governor Landry seeks federal disaster declaration and urges quick DHS confirmation

Louisiana – Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry is expected to meet with President Joe Biden to discuss his request for a Presidential Disaster Declaration following the recent terrorist attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. This declaration would provide critical federal assistance to safeguard health, property, and public safety as the state responds to the aftermath of the attack.

Governor Landry is requesting Public Assistance, Category B, Emergency Protective Measures, including Direct Federal Assistance, to support necessary protective actions and survivor care in Orleans Parish. Additionally, he is seeking Individual Assistance, specifically crisis counseling for those affected by the attack.

Alongside his request for federal support, Governor Landry is urging the U.S. Senate—particularly Democratic members of the Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs Committee—to promptly confirm Kristi Noem as Secretary of Homeland Security.

“I look forward to speaking with President Biden today about quickly approving my request for a Presidential Disaster Declaration. This is no time to play around,” said Governor Landry. “Which is why I am also calling on Senate Democrats to allow Kristi Noem to get to work on Day 1 as our Secretary of Homeland Security. There should be no gap in leadership. In the wake of the Bourbon Street and Las Vegas attacks, our nation’s security depends on her quick confirmation.”

A letter detailing the request for the Presidential Disaster Declaration was also submitted. Governor Landry emphasized the urgency of both federal aid and strengthened national security leadership as Louisiana and the nation face heightened threats.
