Shreveport Police Department launches 2025 Citizens Police Academy to strengthen community ties

Shreveport, LA – The Shreveport Police Department kicked off its 2025 Citizens Police Academy on Tuesday night, beginning a new session aimed at fostering stronger connections between officers and the residents they serve.

The academy offers participants an inside look at the department’s operations, policies, and procedures, while also providing officers with a platform to engage with the community and gather feedback. The initiative is designed to promote transparency, trust, and collaboration between law enforcement and the public.

The opening session was led by Dr. Michael Hicks, a longtime collegiate professor and instructor at the SPD Academy. Under his guidance, attendees were introduced to department staff, took part in discussions, and began learning about the structure and mission of the Shreveport Police Department.

The evening included moments of laughter, meaningful conversation, and the opportunity for officers and citizens to connect on a personal level.

Department officials described the first night as a success and expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming sessions in the weeks ahead. The program will continue with more in-depth topics and interactive experiences that aim to bridge gaps and foster understanding.

Those interested in participating in future sessions or learning more about the program are encouraged to contact the Shreveport Police Department’s Community Oriented Policing Bureau at 318-673-6950.
